The #1 Craft Tip I Give to First-Time Christian Writers

One Thing Every New Christian Author Should Remember

“If you’re asking someone to invest their time and money in your story, give them more than they paid for — every single time.”

One of the questions I’m asked most by Christian writers who are just starting out — especially those publishing their first book — is:

“If you could give me one piece of advice, what would it be?”

Here it is:

Never forget the price point.

Now, that might sound a bit business-minded or even crass — but stick with me.

Writing is a calling, yes. It’s a ministry. It’s art. But it’s also asking someone to invest: their time, their attention, and yes, their money.

Let’s say your book sells for $32 - the current going rate for new hardcover books. That may not sound like much, but for many readers, it’s the equivalent of a meal, a monthly streaming subscription, or some other necessity.

In today’s economy, people are choosing carefully. So if they choose your book — especially as a new author — your job is to make that feel like a decision they’ll never regret.

So what does that mean practically?

It means giving readers more than they expected in every chapter.

More heart. More purpose. More depth. More clarity. More beauty. More truth.

Whether you’re writing fiction, memoir, devotional, or theology — your story needs to remind the reader:

  • Why this message matters.

  • Why this character or topic is worth caring about.

  • Why it was worth choosing your book over a hundred others.

We live in a culture of instant access and distraction. Streaming services drop full seasons at once. People tend to binge on content over the weekend.

Books are different — and they should be. They invite slow consumption, lingering thought, and reflection. We must be intentional with each page.

As a Christian writer, you’re not just telling stories — you’re stewarding truth.

That means being faithful to the craft and mindful of your reader.

You’re not just filling pages. You’re offering transformation — and that’s worth doing well.

So whether you’re writing a debut novel or a 365-day devotional, ask yourself:

“Is this giving the reader more than what they paid for?”

If the answer is yes, then you’re not just selling a book. You’re building trust, planting seeds, and creating something of lasting value.

Keep writing boldly, faithfully, and with excellence. The world needs your voice — but more than that, it needs the hope behind it.
